Rino Bonelli witnesses the shooting from the fourth floor of the liver cancer unit and easily senses the hand of Marco Valli, his Mafia Boss of La Famiglia.

Marco Valli and Rino Bonelli have a similar background - the Chicago Christian Orphanage. The reaction of these men to lifes woes takes them on dramatically different paths due to subtle but highly influential differences in their upbringing, inside and outside the orphanage. The highly educated Marco Valli introduces himself to Anglo-Saxons in heavily accented English as Machiavelli. Marco Valli is the founder member/boss of the Italian Mafia clan in Chicago in the latter decade of the 1990s.

Rino Bonelli is his sharp-shooter capitano- his specialty is instructing the newly initiated Mafia soldiers in the art and science of shooting. The nursery and recruiting ground for the La Famiglia clan is the Chicago Christian Orphanage. Reardon is of Irish descent- his ancestors went through the rigours of British colonial rule, the Potato Blight Famine and American Civil War. Michael comes from a family whose civic duty to the U.S.A. is of paramount importance.

That importance entails sacrifices, some of which carry a high price tag. This story closely intertwines the lives of these three men and more. On a macro level, the interweaving mode extends itself also onto the inextricable rich interchange between European and American history. Throughout this novel, the pendulum of this emotive story swings harmoniously in a constant manner between these two different levels.
